Generics

Adcock Ingram Generics is a forward looking, strategically driven division that continually seeks solutions to the Healthcare needs of the nation while providing affordable, quality generic brands but at the same time being seen as adding value to everything we do.

Today, Adcock Ingram Generics is South Africa's second-largest manufacturer of generic medicines.

What are generic medicines?

These are medicines that have the same active ingredients as the original product, but they do not constitute the same costs and are therefore offered at a much more cost-effective price to the market. Essentially, the patented medicines of today are the generics of tomorrow.

The Medicines Control Council of South Africa, has strict criteria that needs to be followed in order to register a Generic Medicine in South Africa. At Adcock Ingram Generics, we manufacture and produce our Generic Medicine in accordance with local and international guidelines and standards.

Why do we need generic medicines?

The cost of medical care is increasing at a rapid rate, making healthcare unaffordable for a lot of our country's population. One way to reduce these costs without compromising the level of medical care is to substitute the original (ethical) products with generic medicines.

Since the introduction of Act 90 of 1997 in May 2003, it is now law for pharmacists and doctors to inform patients of generic alternatives. The intention is to make sure that medicines stay within the reach of the majority of people living in South Africa and to improve the access to healthcare.

Substitution as indicated in the ACT means that:

  • The active ingredient of the generic must be exactly the same as the original molecule
  • It must be administered in exactly the same way as the original e.g. oral or injection route of administration
  • The dosage form must be the same
  • The quality of manufacturing must be from an approved manufacturing site
  • The same effect with regards to efficacy and safety must be obtained by the patient

How would I get generic medicines?

Act 90 of 1997 has been amended to require doctors and pharmacists to inform all their patients about generic substitutes and to offer the generic instead of the original product. It is still a matter of choice as to whether the patient chooses to pay for the original medication or is willing to accept the generic.

The generic is required by law to be as effective and safe as the original product, which was approved by the Medicines Control Council (MCC). It is pertinent to remember that an individual has the right to request a generic if they are on chronic medication e.g. hypertension or cholesterol. The savings to the patient and to the medical aid are significant.

Can I refuse generic medicines?

It is important that a patient always takes the advice of the doctor or pharmacist. The only real reason for not accepting a generic substitute is that one feels more comfortable with a brand one knows and respects. If an individual feels strongly about the matter, he or she is fully entitled to refuse the generic once it has been offered. It is however worth noting the cost implications.

Are all generic medicines the same?

The active ingredients and the amount thereof in any generic substitute are required by law to be the same as the original patented product. Only once it has been tested and proven to be as effective and safe, (known as "bio-equivalence" testing), will the product be available for sale through a pharmacy. This means that there may be many different versions of the same medicine available, which are produced by different companies.

A doctor or pharmacist will be able to advise the patient on the best choice of generic medicine, which they know, and trust.
